Kikai is Ade Stacey's study of oni, the demons and ogres of Japanese folklore. Across 134 hardcover pages he works through line drawings, sketches, and finished paintings of these brash, rule-breaking creatures, with all the menace a demon should carry.
Familiar figures turn up throughout, including Fujin and Raijin, along with several well-known Japanese characters redrawn as oni. Pages pair clean linework with colour versions, so you can see how a design reads before and after shading and palette.
This volume is part of Ade's larger project examining the subjects used in Japanese tattooing over nine volumes. For tattooers working in the Japanese style it is a focused reference on one of the genre's core subjects, and for collectors it fits neatly alongside the rest of the series. The compact hardcover format also makes it easy to keep at the station for quick reference.
