Christian Warlich (1891-1964) was the best-known tattooer in Europe during the first half of the 20th century. From a pub on Kieler Strasse in Hamburg's St. Pauli district he tattooed behind a curtain, and he is often credited with professionalizing tattooing in Germany. His flash album passed to the Museum of Hamburg History after his death and has been among the most coveted objects in tattoo history ever since.
This hardcover edition presents more than 300 of Warlich's hand-drawn designs restored to their original color, along with photographs and archival material, much of it previously unpublished. The imagery is classic European tattooing: cowboys, Native American heads, Chinese dragons, geishas, ships and eagles, daggers, snakes, skulls and pinup women, with line drawings next to the painted sheets. Text runs in German and English.
It is a core tattoo history book for anyone studying where traditional tattoo flash came from, and a practical source of period designs for tattooers who work in an old-school European style.
