Doc King was a well-known Midwestern tattoo artist who spent his early years on show as the "world's most artistically tattooed man." He went on to tattoo, among others, George Zastrow, one of the heavily tattooed attractions of his day. This book gathers his designs along with images and memories from the 1940s.
Every design is a high-resolution scan taken from the original flash, so the color and line quality come through cleanly. The subject matter is classic American traditional: true-love hearts, Mother crosses and angels, parrots, sparrows, daggers and Death Before Dishonor banners, the kind of imagery that filled shop walls at the time.
