The Fingerwave Book is devoted to a single element of Japanese tattooing: the fingerwave, the stylized water first made famous by Japanese woodblock print artists and now a backbone of large-scale tattoo work. Tattooers Grime and Craig Toth curated it, gathering black and white wave drawings from a long list of contributors.
Artists in the book include Henning Jørgensen, Jondix, BJ Betts, Filip Leu and Ichibay, among many others. Seeing so many approaches side by side is the point. You can compare how each artist handles flow, foam, line weight and the way water wraps around a subject, then bring that into your own backgrounds.
The 164-page hardcover is printed at a generous 11" x 14", so the linework is easy to study. It's a core Japanese tattoo book for any shop library and a strong reference for anyone working on sleeves, back pieces or body suits. A second volume, The Fingerwave Book 2, is also available.
