Tino "Rosie" Camanga was born in 1910 in the Philippines and moved to Honolulu before World War II. He picked up tattooing by watching fellow Filipino tattooers in the shops of downtown and Chinatown, took a part-time tattooing job in 1944, and kept working into the 1990s.
His flash started from the standard designs of the day and drifted into territory that belonged only to him. Sheets were collaged with magazine clippings, rebuilt from older designs, or filled with images and sentiments that never appeared on anyone else's wall. He kept drawing in the flash format long after he stopped tattooing, and the results are obsessive, primitive and completely sincere.
This 87-page hardcover, written by Don Ed Hardy and published by Hardy Marks, reproduces Rosie's color flash alongside his story. It's a vintage tattoo flash book for collectors of tattoo history and for tattooers interested in folk art that stretched the traditional canon decades before that was fashionable.
