Bakemono are a class of yokai in Japanese folklore: supernatural beings, apparitions and shapeshifters. In this hardcover, Ade Stacey works through that world in 140 pages of line drawings and sketches, mixing traditional depictions with his own ideas of how these ghosts might look and giving room to lesser-known creatures alongside the famous ones.
Inside you will find figures such as the Oiwa ghost wreathed in flame, the monkey-like Shibaten, the red-skinned, one-eyed Shunobon and Mikari Baba, a one-eyed crone carrying fire in her mouth. The drawings are clean and readable, so they are easy to study for composition or adapt into designs.
The book is one part of Ade's nine-volume study of the subjects used in Japanese tattooing. It is a useful Japanese tattoo book for artists building yokai and ghost pieces, and for collectors following the series.
