Classic Tattoo Stencils 1: Designs in Acetate is the first of Cliff White's two volumes of vintage acetate tattoo stencils. White, who owns a tattoo shop on Long Island, has built a large collection of tattoo memorabilia, and this 440-page hardcover presents a big portion of his acetates.
Before thermal copiers, tattooers cut designs into sheets of acetate and used them to transfer the outline onto skin. The stencils here are shown in that original form: angels and devils, panthers, Kewpies and devil women, dragons, nautical symbols and mythical creatures, all drawn for repeated daily use in working shops.
For traditional tattooers, these tattoo stencils are a direct study in how classic designs were reduced to essential lines. For collectors, they are rare survivors of shop practice that was usually thrown away once worn out. Volume 2 continues with more mid-century acetates if you want the complete pair.
