CONTENTTribal patterns, history, and insight
In the Solomon Islands, tattooing was for centuries a marker of status, identity, achievement and connection to ancestors, bound up with community and spiritual life. Much of that knowledge has faded, and few detailed sources survive. Fingerprints of the Pacific sets out to document, reconstruct and share that heritage before more of it is lost.
Built on years of research, archival material, early photographs and input from elders working to protect their customs, the book looks at the distinct patterns and symbolism of different island groups. The reconstructions aim to stay faithful to the original traditions rather than reinterpret them, and they are shown as clear geometric line work alongside historic photographs and full body layouts. Tattooer Will Cattersel's research and collaboration with local artists shaped the project.
This 237-page hardcover is an important reference for tattooers working in Pacific and blackwork traditions, and a respectful tattoo history book for anyone interested in Oceanic culture.
