CONTENTFlash, Line Drawings, Photos, & Tales
R. Johnson's flash comes out of the Lyle Tuttle collection, where it sat unseen for decades. The designs are bold, iconic traditional tattoo imagery with a folk-art streak that makes them unmistakably his own. This tattoo flash book reproduces more than 34 full sheets, plus many of his earliest designs pulled out and isolated as clean line drawings you can trace and tattoo.
For years Johnson was a name on flash with no story attached. Research into Lyle Tuttle's correspondence and photo archive finally fills in who he was, tying him to American circus culture and to several important figures in tattooing. Those findings are laid out alongside the flash in bonus tattoo history features, photos and tales.
A 94-page hardcover for tattooers who want usable traditional reference with real provenance, and for collectors tracking down the lesser-known hands behind early American tattooing.
