Maud Stevens Wagner left home young and made her own way as an aerialist and contortionist in the circus before becoming one of the first known women tattooists in America. With her husband Gus Wagner, billed as the "most artistically marked-up man in America," she travelled the country as the Wagner's Traveling Museum, showing their tattoos and tattooing customers in sideshows, dime museums and pop-up shops while raising their daughter, Lotteva. The couple later ran the Wagner Amusement Company, promoting street fairs, carnivals and expositions.
Alan Govenar's hardcover tells her story through an oral history from Lotteva, archival photographs of Maud, Gus and Maud's own tattoos, clippings and photos from Gus's scrapbooks, newspaper articles and obituaries, and tattoo flash from Gus Wagner's notebooks.
It is a well-sourced tattoo history book for collectors, and a look at early American hand tattooing for working tattooers. It pairs with the Lotteva Wagner Davis and Gus Wagner volumes.
