Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins (1911-1973) worked out of Honolulu and is one of the most influential figures in American traditional tattooing. From the Great Walls of China Sea collects his flash as it hung in his shop, photographed by Dave Lum.
The 150-page, 6" x 8.5" hardcover includes original flash, some of it not published before, along with a little history. The range shows why his work still sets the standard: Chinese dragons, geishas and Asian-influenced designs alongside pinups, hearts, octopus, butterflies, zodiac signs, tigers and roses, all in the clean lines and saturated palette he is known for.
For tattooers, this Sailor Jerry flash book is a compact way to study the source of so much of today's traditional work. For fans and collectors, it is a close look at what customers actually saw on Jerry's walls.
