British tattoo historian Terry Manton introduces the men and women who made their living from tattooing in Britain in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Familiar names such as Sutherland Macdonald, Tom Riley, Alfred South and George Burchett are here, but so are the lesser-known pioneers of electric tattooing: George Bigmore, Charlie Bell, Bill Mansford, Cecil and Manley Rhodes, Alex Gordon, Bill Donnelly, Leo Heath, Bob Devine, Alex Gillmore and many more.
Manton tells the story of Lucy Battell, one of Britain's earliest female tattoo artists, and follows the early professors of tattooing who worked the ports of Cardiff, Portsmouth, Liverpool, Chatham, Dover and Plymouth and the garrison towns of Folkestone and Aldershot. Tattooed attractions of the circus and fairground appear too, along with the showmen who promoted them.
More than 500 images fill its 249 pages: rare adverts, business cards, stencils, designs, photographs, shop fronts and machines. An essential tattoo history book for anyone interested in British tattooing.
