CONTENTTattoo history, photos, and flash images
The third installment of Bray & Co.'s Tattoo Catalogue, curated by Derin Bray, accompanied the company's tattoo auction of July 13, 2025. Like the earlier editions, it's far more than a sale list: this limited-edition, 150-page softcover documents hundreds of rare objects, including newly discovered flash, vintage photographs, shop signs, machines, banners and business cards.
Essays and previously unpublished images bring out new material from "Sailor" George Fosdick, George Burchett, "Brooklyn" Joe Lieber, Bert Grimm, Lew Alberts, Charlie Wagner and others. Several private collections are featured, among them tattoo photographs and ephemera from Mav Mess, material from National Tattoo Association founders Don and Flo Makofskie, and hand-carved and painted works and sideshow props by Gus and Maud Wagner from the collection of Kelly and Rhett Johnson.
For anyone serious about tattoo history, it's a visual record of material that has now gone into private hands. The 2024 edition is also available, as is the 2026 catalogue.
