In 1897 Gus Wagner embarked on a journey as a merchant seaman. While traveling the world Gus learned the trade of tattooing with handmade tools from tribesmen in Java and Borneo. After 4 years, Gus went on to make his own tattoo tools, returned home from sea, and became a traveling tattooist, tattooed man, and circus performer. Gus remained faithful to his handmade tools and the old ways of tattooing, and resented the new electric machines that changed the art form. Along with many other artists, he carried tattooing inland, making it part of the culture of small town America.
This book showcases more than 100 examples of Gus's tattoo flash, historical photos of his life & work, handmade tattoo machines, and excerpts from interviews about his life.
