Crap Hound 12: Books & Bees is the largest single issue of Sean Tejaratchi's clip-art zine to date, at 112 pages. As with every Crap Hound, the pages are built from high-contrast black and white imagery taken from vintage catalogs, advertisements, obscure books and other printed ephemera.
This issue is all about books, bees and the places they overlap: open books and readers, school-day scenes, spelling bees, beehives, filigree bees and a few odd surprises like Santa and a jack-o'-lantern with his nose in a book. The arrangement is dense and playful, and the images are clean enough to lift straight into a design.
Tattooers use Crap Hound as clip-art reference because the line work is already bold and readable, and bees in particular are a popular tattoo subject. Collage artists, printmakers and designers will get just as much out of it.
