Commerce & Industry Volume Three: Products and Services Part 2 is the third installment of Billy Bishop's series collecting printed commercial imagery from the twentieth century. Its 80 pages are filled with odd clip art, trade logos and labels, coats of arms, shields, clowns, cupids, beer and a lot more, all reproduced in black and white.
Old commercial art has always fed tattooing. These logos and labels were drawn to read instantly at small sizes, which is exactly what a good tattoo needs, and the animals, characters and emblems here translate easily into flash, lettering ideas or sign work. Collectors of ephemera will enjoy it for its own sake.

CONTENTLogos and Labels
Billy Bishop's Commerce & Industry series collects vintage trademark logos and labels into reference books for tattooers, illustrators and graphic designers. Volume Five gathers more than 1,000 images built around people and cars: men, women, children and automotive imagery, taken from old commercial logos and printed in black and white.
Old logo art is a natural fit for tattooing. The designs had to read clearly at small sizes and in one color, so they offer strong silhouettes, simple shapes and plenty of character. Use them for lettering ideas, figure poses or compositions for small, bold tattoos, or simply as a record of mid-century commercial art.

Volume Six closes out Billy Bishop's six-book Commerce & Industry series and is the largest of the run: 104 pages and more than 1,100 vintage trademark logos. This one is organized around food and beverage brands, nautical imagery and a big section of round logos.
Round logos are especially useful for tattooers, since the circular frame, banner and lettering arrangements carry over directly to compact, readable designs. The nautical pages add mermaids and sea imagery from commercial art rather than tattoo flash, which gives a different take on familiar subjects, and the food and drink section is full of chefs, animals and lettering with plenty of personality.
