CONTENTBlack & White
Crap Hound is Sean Tejaratchi's clip-art zine, started in Portland, Oregon in 1994. Its pages are built from high-contrast black and white images taken from antique catalogs, advertisements, obscure publications and found ephemera, sorted by subject and paired with Tejaratchi's sharp social commentary.
Issue 7, Church & State, first published in 2008, takes on religion and patriotism across 96 pages. You get crosses, Christ figures, rosaries, bibles and 'Word of God' banners alongside bald eagles, Air Mail wings, coins, school imagery and people in prayer, in both vintage and more recent styles.
Sacred hearts, crosses and eagles are core American traditional tattoo subjects, and this issue gives tattooers a wide range of reference for them. It is also a favorite with collage artists and one of the essential issues for anyone collecting Crap Hound.
