Milton Zeis is one of the key figures of mid-century American tattooing. He first saw tattooing at age nine at a riverboat show, travelled for years, and settled in Rockford, Illinois, where he tattooed and ran The Zeis Studio, a mail-order supply business selling flash, pigments and machines. In 1951 he published the Zeis School of Tattooing, a 20-lesson correspondence course that was accredited as a home study program.
This spiral-bound book, shared by tattooer and collector Dana Brunson, gathers Zeis flash in the traditional style: horse, panther and tiger heads, sweet and sour baby heads, nautical women and sailors, monkeys, rose and dagger 'Mother' banners, and a page of peacock variations. The lay-flat binding makes it practical at the drawing table.
It is a solid traditional tattoo flash reference for working tattooers and an important piece of tattoo history for collectors.
