Bert Grimm (1900-1985) is one of the foundational figures of American traditional tattooing. Over a long career he worked in Chicago, St. Louis, Portland and beyond, and is best known for his shop on The Pike in Long Beach, California, where artists such as Bob Shaw, Lyle Tuttle and Dave Gibson spent time around him.
The Bert Grimm Tattoo Museum Collection, curated by Wes Grimm, opens up the Grimm family archive. Its 350 pages draw on Bert's personal photo album, rare photographs, artifacts, letters and a large run of his flash sheets, along with flash by Gene Grimm and others connected to the family shops.
For tattooers, this Bert Grimm book is a deep well of classic designs - eagles, panthers, snakes, ladies, skulls and daggers - from the source. For collectors, it is an unusually personal look at the life behind the flash.
