Leonard "Stoney" St. Clair, born in West Virginia in 1912, joined the circus at 15 as a sword swallower and picked up tattooing from fellow performers. He spent more than 50 years on the road with circuses and carnivals before running shops in Tampa and in Columbus, Ohio, where the sign over his door read "Stoney Knows How: Tattooing by the Teacher of the Art."
Folklorist Alan Govenar recorded Stoney's life in his own voice, and the result has become a classic of tattoo history. This hardcover edition, published by Schiffer in full color, pairs those stories of sideshow life, travelling shows and old-time tattooing with more than 150 photographs of Stoney's flash and the people he tattooed.
It is a rewarding tattoo history book for collectors and carnival enthusiasts, and a good source of vintage flash for tattooers who want to see how the old timers drew and talked about the trade.
