My Private Collection: Frank Howard Edition, from Danny G, reproduces more than twenty original watercolor tattoo designs by Frank Howard (1857-1925), who at his peak ran the largest tattoo shop and supply business in the United States. Dragons, geishas and demon heads - designs painted to be worn, not framed.
The paintings came down through Boston's Liberty family. Edward "Dad" Liberty began tattooing around 1916 a block from Howard in Scollay Square and, after Howard's death in 1925, took over his Court Street shop along with equipment, effects and painted window shades. The watercolors are on the same material as those shades and were likely bound for customers to browse. They later passed to Harold "Lefty" Liberty, Boston's last working tattooer before the state banned tattooing in 1962.
This compact 48-page hardcover is vintage tattoo flash and tattoo history in one, and a reference for identifying Howard's style.
