CONTENTHistory, flash, paintings, and photographs
Henk Schiffmacher is an Amsterdam tattoo artist and historian who has spent decades building one of the most important private collections of tattoo material in the world. This TASCHEN edition, edited by Noel Daniel, opens that collection up across 512 pages, covering roughly 1730 to 1970.
The range is wide: rare flash sheets and original drawings from early Western tattooing, paintings, prints, tattooing tools and photographs of tattooed people and the artists who worked on them, along with material from Polynesian, Asian and European traditions. Much of it had not been published before, and Schiffmacher adds his own commentary throughout.
Despite the page count, this edition is a compact hardcover, easy to keep on a shelf or at a station. It works as a broad tattoo history book for collectors and as a deep well of vintage reference for tattooers. A larger XL edition of the same collection is also stocked.
