Monsterama #3 is the third issue of Allan Graves' retro horror zine, built in the cut-and-paste spirit of Crap Hound. This issue turns to the circus and the sideshow: show posters, freakshow banners, human-oddity ads and drive-in advertising, laid out as dense black and white collages of monsters, vampires, ghouls, ghosts and panicked pinups. Vintage material sits alongside contemporary horror art contributed by artists from around the world.
Graves is a UK-based artist who edits and self-publishes the series. Each 100-page, saddle-stitched issue is organized by theme, so a spread of clowns or skeleton-faced mermaids gives you dozens of variations on one idea at once.
For tattooers, Monsterama works as a horror art reference to flip through when drawing up spooky flash or hunting for an odd pose, a lettering style or a vintage monster face. Collectors of horror zines and fans of Crap Hound will want the full run. Note that the content is aimed at adults.
