Tattoo, published by Taschen in its XL format, draws on the private collection of Henk Schiffmacher, the tattoo artist and historian who spent around four decades gathering drawings, designs, photographs and artifacts from tattooing around the world. This 440-page hardcover covers roughly the 1730s through the 1970s.
The book moves across more than two centuries of global tattoo history, from early accounts and ethnographic material through the flash, paintings and photographs of the professional era. Much of the material had never been published before, and Schiffmacher adds his own commentary throughout, so it reads as a guided tour of the collection rather than a picture dump. Taschen lists more than 700 images.
This is the definitive tattoo history book for a serious library: big, heavy and built to be studied. Tattooers will find endless traditional reference, and collectors get one of the most complete visual records of the craft in print.
