In Japanese tattooing the background does as much work as the main subject. Clouds, wind, flames, rocks, water and whirlpools set the movement of a piece and make the subject stand out. In Looking for the Right Flow, Fabio Gargiulo focuses on one of those elements, the wave, and how it is constructed and connected.
Across 180 pages of line drawings, Gargiulo shows his approach to Japanese waves on their own and in relation to the subjects they surround, at scales from half sleeves to full body suits. Some pages carry red pencil shading that shows how depth is built into the flow.
