Dave Gibson - The Lettering Book grew out of the tattoo lettering seminars Gibson taught at conventions around the world. Still unfinished when he died in 2019, it was completed from his original manuscript by Geo Rogers and Patrick Kitzel, who kept to his words and page layouts.
The 80-page hardcover walks through how letters are built: stroke order and sequence, construction of individual characters, detailing, underlining and flourishes, and how letters flow together into script. It reads like having his class notes in hand, with the reasoning behind each step rather than just finished alphabets to copy.
Dave Gibson spent time around Bert Grimm's shop on the Long Beach Pike and became known for his lettering, which is why this tattoo lettering book carries weight. Apprentices will use it to build fundamentals; experienced tattooers will find ways to tighten their script.

Tattoo Machine Discourse Volume 1 is Shane Enholm's book on the American tattoo machine. Across 147 pages he draws on decades of collecting, close research and plain affection for the machines themselves, setting down what he has learned about how they were made, who made them and how they changed over time.
The tone is as entertaining as it is informative. Rather than a dry catalog, it reads like a conversation with someone who has handled a great many old machines and spent years tracking down their stories, which makes it approachable even if you have never built a frame or wound a coil.
Essential reading for machine builders, collectors of vintage tattoo machines and anyone interested in tattoo history from the tools outward. The compact softcover is easy to keep on the bench while you work.
