Edward Funk - Crazy Philadelphia Eddie - started out in the tattoo parlors of Coney Island in the early 1950s and went on to run shops in Philadelphia's Chinatown and on South Street for decades. Tattooing: The Life and Times of Crazy Philadelphia Eddie is his multi-volume memoir, ghostwritten by Eric Foemmel from Eddie's own recorded stories.
Volume 3 follows Eddie back and forth between California and Pennsylvania and on trips overseas. He opens more shops, deals with turf wars and hard-nosed competition, and loses people close to him - and this is the stretch where he starts to have real influence on the tattoo business. The 136-page softcover mixes those stories with period photos and flash from the shops.
It is first-person tattoo history from someone who was in the room, and an easy, entertaining read for tattooers and collectors interested in the street-shop era of American tattooing.
