Edward Funk - Crazy Philadelphia Eddie - started out in the tattoo parlors of Coney Island in the early 1950s and went on to run shops in Philadelphia's Chinatown and on South Street for decades. Tattooing: The Life and Times of Crazy Philadelphia Eddie is his multi-volume memoir, ghostwritten by Eric Foemmel from Eddie's own recorded stories.
Volume 4 covers Eddie's middle years: the growth of the National Tattoo Association and its conventions, gambling troubles, running several shops at once, a broken engagement and a stormy romance, the murder of a close friend, and raising his kids. The 136-page softcover includes vintage photos of figures like Bert Grimm, Bob Shaw, Sailor Vern and Charlie Wagner, plus flash.
It is a candid tattoo history book from inside the trade, and a natural next read for anyone who has worked through the earlier volumes.
