On October 19, 2016, a natural gas explosion destroyed the Portland building that housed Art Work Rebels Tattoo Studio on NW 23rd Avenue. Inside a metal flat file in the rubble were years of Jeff P.'s hand-painted flash - 11" x 14" watercolor-board sheets of skulls, pinups, snakes and skeletons. The site was sealed for asbestos, and none of it was recovered.
What survived were casual, handheld photos Jeff had taken of his sheets, having stopped sending work out for professional scans because flash was meant to be used, not preserved. Everything That Burned is built from those photographs: the complete archive of his pre-explosion flash, arranged in reverse order from the last sheet painted to the first.
The 120-page, 6" x 8" hardcover is honest about its imperfect source images. For tattooers it is a compact book of traditional color flash; for collectors it is a moving record of working art that only exists now on these pages.
