Percy Waters (1888-1952) was one of the most important figures in early American tattooing. Born in Anniston, Alabama, he settled in Detroit in 1917 and built what was probably the largest tattoo supply business in the world at the time, advertising in the Police Gazette and Billboard, designing his own machines and earning a patent in 1929. His flash sheets travelled to shops across the country.
The first half of Old Glory 2 documents his life and work with rare flash, photographs, ephemera and a biography, and sets his sheets beside those of other suppliers of the period to show where Waters fit among his contemporaries. The second half follows the format of the first Old Glory: usable line drawing reference, with designs selected and redrawn by Moises Exposito, Christopher Maier and Nick Filth into clean outlines that keep Waters' hand.
With thousands of designs organized by subject, this is both a serious tattoo history book and a practical source of vintage tattoo flash outlines.
