Bowery Scab Merchant collects original acetate tattoo stencils from Stanley "Bowery Stan" Moskowitz, reproduced across 108 pages. Acetates were how tattooers transferred designs before thermal paper: a design was scratched into a clear sheet, dusted, and pressed onto the skin, and these are the working tools of a shop on the Bowery.
The images run through classic American traditional subject matter, including peacocks, dogs, and Native American heads, shown as the bold, simplified outlines that made a good stencil. Every copy comes with an authentic acetate, which makes the book an object as much as a reference.
