CONTENTBlack & White
Crap Hound is the clip-art zine Sean Tejaratchi started in 1994 in Portland, Oregon. Each issue gathers high-contrast black and white images around a theme, pulled from old catalogs, advertising, rare books and other printed ephemera, then laid out as dense, carefully arranged pages that read almost like collage.
Issue 5 covers hands, hearts and eyes: handshakes, pointing and praying hands, anatomical hearts and medical-style illustrations, and page after page of eyeballs. Tejaratchi's essays and arrangement also poke at what these symbols mean and how they have been used culturally over time.
For tattooers, Crap Hound is a reliable reference for line art that already reads well in black and white, and hands, hearts and eyes come up in tattoo work constantly. It is just as useful for collage artists, printmakers and designers looking for clean vintage source material in one 98-page softcover.
