Crap Hound is the clip art zine Sean Tejaratchi started in Portland in 1994. Each issue gathers high-contrast black and white images, mostly from printed sources of the 1920s through the 1960s such as old catalogs, advertising and obscure books, and arranges them by theme. It began with satirical commentary mixed in and grew into pages of pure imagery.
Issue 8 takes on superstition. Over 98 pages it traces the symbols people have attached luck, fear and ritual to: black cats, butterflies, death's-head moths, bats and owls, brooms, apples, locks, moons, hats, knives, bibles, tea, gifts, candles, keys, ghosts and Friday the 13th.
Tattooers have long kept Crap Hound on the shelf as reference, because the images are clean, bold and easy to adapt into designs, and collage artists use it for the same reasons. A strong starting point if you are new to the series.
