Flash from the Bowery: Classic American Tattoos, 1900-1950 reproduces original acetate rubbings from Charlie Wagner's shop on New York's Bowery, the Black Eye Barbershop. As far as is known, it's the only art from that shop to survive.
The collection was assembled by Cliff White, a Long Island tattoo shop owner and collector of tattoo memorabilia. Across 400 pages you get more than 900 individual designs: nautical themes, clipper ships, eagles, hearts and banners, Asian imagery, flowers, boxers, circus characters and plenty of girls. Because they're stencil rubbings, the designs show the bare structure of early American traditional tattoo flash.
It's essential vintage tattoo flash reference for tattooers who work in the traditional style, and a core tattoo history book for collectors and students of the Bowery era and early New York tattooing.
