CONTENTJapanese Style Flash
Classic Flash 3: Japanese Style is the third volume in Jeromey "Tilt" McCulloch's Classic Flash series, made with Justin "Lowercase j" Sellers. It collects more than 100 sheets of Japanese tattoo flash that blend Japanese folklore and yokai with the bold outlines and limited palette of American traditional tattooing. The book is split into three sections: McCulloch's designs, Sellers' designs and pieces they drew together, with the work getting more involved, with backgrounds and filler, as you go.
The designs are deliberately simplified so they can be tattooed in a single session, which makes this an approachable source of Japanese-inspired imagery for clients who are not ready for a full traditional piece. McCulloch owns NewLife Tattoos in Champaign, Illinois; Sellers has painted flash since 2005, tattoos at Tattoo Mark's in State College, Pennsylvania, and builds tattoo machines.
It suits shops that want ready-to-tattoo Japanese flash on the counter and artists looking for fresh takes on masks, characters and animals.
