Pops ran a tattoo shop and museum in North Carolina. After he died in 2017, his wife compiled the Extravaganza of Stencils volumes to document his life in tattooing and the friends and artists who influenced him. The books are built from his collection: stencils and rubbings, tracings, business cards and photographs.
Volume 1 centers on vintage acetate and paper stencils from legendary artists including August "Cap" Coleman, Rex and Brenda Bennett, Bert Grimm, Bob Shaw, Charles Wagner, Walter Cleveland and Mary Anne Smith. Dragons, birds and butterflies appear alongside photos of flash displays, old shops and an early rotary machine.
It works both as a usable source of classic tattoo stencils and as a record of how shops actually stored and transferred their designs. Worth having in any artist's library, and best paired with Vol. 2.
